SCHS Debuts Orientation to Teaching Program

Orientation to teaching is class that teaches you how to deal with different situations involving kids. Students in this program will do different things throughout the year, such as minor tasks, observations and small lessons.

Amy Shepherd teaches this class. The class is offered to sophomores, juniors, and seniors after completing FACS. Every Thursday these kids go to the elementary school for about an hour and do different things. Grading is based on showing up and you have to have up to forty hours by the end of the year. Some students drive themselves while the others are picked up in a mini bus and taken to the other campus.

These students recently went over to help with the Thanksgiving parties. Some students made crafts. Other students watched movies about Thanksgiving. Some kids had a feast during that time. In one class room they even learned how to make a pumpkin pie.

Some students will be celebrating Christmas holidays before break by watching movies, making crafts, and eating different amounts of food.

Rosalyn Donham says “I love working and interacting with young children.” While Destiny Brooks says she enjoys “positive teaching environment” she also says she likes helping the students with math problems.

As a teacher cadet I feel privileged to be able to work with students and learn from the teachers. This program is important because it allows insight into the education field before you plan to become a teacher. The program is a great idea for students who are thinking about majoring in education and is a good way to find out what you want to do in the future.
